Vegetarian vs Veganism

Most people will know that vegetarians and vegans don’t eat meat and fish. Vegetarians are still consuming dairy, eggs and other items that comes from an animal. While vegans won’t consume anything that has to do with animals at all. There’s a lot of varieties if it comes to vegetarian diets and it seems to be that vegetarian diets and veganism grow to get more popularity. There are many different reasons why people ditch the animal products. It can be for their health, for the animals and the environment and climate changes.

What is vegetarianism?

Vegetarians are people that won’t consume products or byproducts of animal slaughter. However they are still consuming eggs, dairy (milk and cheeses and yoghurt) and honey. There are different variations with vegetarian diets.

These include :

  • Lacto-ovo-vegetarian. People who follow this diet avoid all types of meat and fish but do consume dairy products and eggs.
  • Lacto-vegetarian. People on this diet do not eat any meat, fish, or eggs but do consume dairy products.
  • Ovo-vegetarian. Individuals following this diet do not eat any meat, fish, or dairy products but do consume eggs.
  • Pescatarian. Those who follow this diet avoid all meats expect fish and other types of seafood. However, this does not meet the traditional definition of vegetarianism, and many people refer to the pescatarian diet as being semi-vegetarian or flexitarian.

What is veganism?

Vegans avoid consuming or using any products or byproducts that comes from an animal. People see it as a stricter version of vegetarianism, because you don’t only avoid the meat of an animal, but also every kind of cruelty that comes with the dairy products as well. But also the silk, wool and leather goods is something that vegans won’t consume.

Vegans strictly avoid consuming any foods or beverages that contain:

  • meat
  • poultry
  • fish and shellfish
  • eggs
  • dairy products
  • honey
  • insects
  • rennet, gelatin, and other types of animal protein
  • stock or fats that derive from animals

Strict vegans also extend these principles beyond their diet and will try, where possible, to avoid any product that directly or indirectly involves the human use of animals. These products can include:

  • leather goods
  • wool
  • silk
  • beeswax
  • soaps, candles, and other products that contain animal fats, such as tallow
  • latex products that contain casein, which comes from milk proteins
  • cosmetics or other products that manufacturers test on animals

“While both diets focus on eating more plant-based foods, vegetarians are allowed to include eggs, honey, and dairy. Vegans omit all animal foods or animal-sourced products, including meats, poultry, dairy, honey, and eggs,”
